Before we even started the plan for the wedding, I started to think where to do the after wedding photography session, as I wanted to have that dreamy pictures, the perfect shots, like the ones you see on Pinterest. I know, you might say that Pinterest and Instagram ruined our lives. Or improved them. All I know is that I like to see all the locations through the lens of a camera and I know no better way to conserve my long term memories. Even if I do have a great memory, there are times when it’s failing me and the easiest way to travel back in time is through photos.

This being said, I did my research. The winner was Fuerteventura and I will explain why, but first let me mention some of the other locations worth to be taken into consideration in Europe or nearby:

  • Marrakech + a trip to the desert, Morocco
  • Cappadocia, Turkey
  • Venice, Italy
  • Amalfi Coast, Italy
  • Como Lake, Italy
  • Tenerife, Spain
  • Santorini, Greece
  • Iceland

At the end of the day, our choice was between Marrakech and Fuerteventura as both have sand dunes, but Marrakech and the trip to the desert needed more than 2 days, so we stick to Fuerteventura. And we did not regret it. Our photographers were Grabazei Photography, and we cannot recommend them more. Thanks again, guys, you are GREAT! Shootout to their Instagram account.

Fuerteventura has the perfect scenery for a great vacation. You will get crystal clear water, sand dunes, white little villages, palm trees, windmills, empty white sand beaches, great roads to drive around, it’s fairly cheap, has constant temperature all year round and it has a very relaxed and bohemian atmosphere. Nature is spectacular here and the landscapes are wild.

My first time here was 7 years ago, when I spent a week on the island, staying at Sheraton Fuerteventura Golf & Spa, a very lovely resort. The only downside of this resort is the color of the water next to it, not as blue as you can find in the south and north of the island. Taking this into account, next time we will book a hotel in Corralejo, Costa Calma or Morro Jable, for the beautiful blue water. One activity while here can be scuba-diving. It was my first time doing scuba and I liked it, but not that much to try it again. The underwater world is marvelous and scary.

I went for the second time in May 2019, when we spent 2 days in Fuerteventura driving around the island. The most important thing while here is to make sure you are renting a car. We rented our car from Orlando for 50 euro/2 days, full insurance, full to full policy. Everything went smooth, no credit card needed, no deposit left. The only downside for this period are the strong winds which can be pretty annoying, but I strongly recommend the island in September and October when the winds are slowing down.

If you want to stay in the capital city, Puerto del Rosario, like we did, my recommendation is Fuerteventura tú Alquiler II, a 2 bedrooms apartment, suitable for 4 persons and squeaky clean.

Now, let me tell you what can be seen on the island and what makes it so amazing.

First stop it was at the Corralejo sand dunes. The road is simply stunning: on aside, are the sand dunes and on the other side is the blue Atlantic Ocean. If you drive a bit more up north you will also find Corralejo Beach, a white long sand beach.

Locations to visit starting from the north of the island, going south:

  • La Oliva village
  • Molino de el Roque & Tefia Windmill — windmills, very scenic
  • El Cotillo and La Concha beach + the Lighthouse
  • Barranco de Los Enamorados, but you have to do a bit of hiking to get there. We could not find them, as our time was limited
  • Cactus Garden
  • Betancuria Village (former capital of Fuerteventura) — lies in a deep valley next to an old, dried-up riverbed. When we went there, this village was empty, so we appreciated having the place only for ourselves
  • Vega de Rio Palmas Village
  • Ajuy Village and the Ajuy caves, plus the sunset can be seen from here
  • Oasis Park — animal park
  • Sotavento Beach
  • Mal Nombre Beach
  • Jandia
  • Morro Jable
  • Cofete beach (in the south-west)
  • Lobos Island — 5 minutes boat ride from Fuerteventura

The island has been declared a Biosphere Reserve and is a surfing and water sports paradise. It’s the second most important world destination when it comes to windsurfing. The first one is Hawaii.
